Good looking till the end: Apocalypse questions rolled off the tongue on the red carpet of the offbeat, end-of-days dramedy, which pairs Carell, playing a buttoned-up insurance salesman, with Knightley, as his free-spirited neighbor, Penny. “This is a good end-of-the-world dress, actually,” said Knightley, showing off her floral Valentino look. “I was thinking that when I put it on. It’s quite comfy, as well.” So, if an asteroid hit, you wouldn’t find her in sweats? “I don’t really own any sweatpants, actually. So, no,” she said. Carell sported some new scruff on the carpet, and talked about why his oppressed character Dodge, a man who spends his final days with Penny searching for his high school love, appealed to him. “He’s a guy who lives with a mountain of regret on his back,” said the star, “and that to me is tragic, especially given the circumstances of this movie. So I felt like he had a really interesting arc.”
In L.A., life goes merrily on: It was a happy lot that walked the doomsday-shrouded carpet. Knightley arrived relaxed and friendly, playing with the slim new engagement ring on her hand, given to her recently by British rocker James Righton. Right behind her walked beaming (newly married) mom-to-be Barrymore, who arrived dressed casually in jeans and a sweater and sporting bright red lipstick.
